Many PCM students naturally drift towards engineering after passing their 12th exams, partially because they never actually thought of  stopping and  evaluating their options, and partially because they have been led by their parents, friends or the society to believe that engineering is the end-all, be-all of a PCM student.  Now, what if you are someone who knows that engineering is not the one for you, or were unable to clear the JEE and other engineering entrance exams. We are here to help you out- 
 
Below is the list of  promising career options for PCM students after class 12th (other than Engineering.)
 
 
COMMERCIAL PILOT 
 
                                   
 
How to become a commercial pilot?
  • To become a Commercial Pilot, one must possess  Commercial Pilot Licence.
  • This Licence is issued after a candidate clears the training program from an Institute recognized by the Civil Aviation Authority of that particular country (DGCA in case of India).
  • Students must also pass Pilot Aptitude test and other medical examinations to be considered eligible to undergo training.
 
Education-
-  The candidate must have cleared 10+2 Science stream schooling with Physics and Mathematics as the main subjects (age of candidate should not be less than 17 years when the course starts).
 - Non Science stream students may pursue the required subjects through NIOS. NIOS schooling can be used to meet the above mentioned requirements. Apart from NIOS, non science stream students may also pursue the required subjects as private candidates from their respective state boards too.
 - The minimum marks required is 50% (may vary from Institute to Institute) aggregate mark
 
Medical requirement-
 Eye sight specifics- one eye has to have perfect eyesight, without any defects (6/6).
Candidate must not have any serious physical deformity. Also, he/she should not have any kind of mental disorder, or any history of having such mental illness
 
Career Opportunities in Aviation:
 -As a Commercial Pilot, you can work with major international or regional airlines, fly cargo planes to transport goods/cargo, work as a corporate pilot to fly corporate jets, and also operate medical or air emergency planes. 
-As an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, you can find opportunities with major international and domestic airlines, airport authorities and aircraft manufacturing firms.
 
 
MERCHANT NAVY
 
A career in the merchant navy involves trading in commercial items like live stocks, liquid cargo, general cargo, oil tankers, chemical tankers and the like all over the world via sea-routes. As a result of this, it is considered as the backbone of international trade.
 
 
 
To join Merchant Navy after High School (Class 12th) you have to appear from IMU CET exam. 
Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test (IMU CET) is an all India online common entrance tests managed by the Indian Maritime University and is for everyone who wishes to join the coveted profession of Merchant Navy.
 
• Qualifying Exam: Candidates have to pass 10+2/ equivalent examination or B.Sc or BE/B.Tech (from IIT or college recognized by AICTE).
• Subjects: Candidates have to pass 10+2/ equivalent examination with PCM or B. Sc. in PCM, Electronics with Physics as individual subject in one of the years.
• Minimum Marks: Minimum 60% marks (10+2/ equivalent examination) or not less than 50% marks (B.Sc & BE/B.Tech)
 
Job opportunities-
 You can work across the various departments of a merchant ship such as-
 - engine department
 - deck department
 - architecture department
 - catering department. 
The job specifications and educational requirements for each department are different.
 
 
INDUSTRIAL/PRODUCT DESIGN
 
What does science have to do with design? Quite a lot, actually. As opposed to the traditional fields of design, such as fashion and apparel design, which a student from any stream can pursue, there are certain sub-fields of design that require the technical expertise of a science student.
 
                              
 
 
What is it?
Industrial design trains one to blend applied art and applied science in order to improve a product in terms of its visual aspects, applicability, and usage.
 
Education-
For Under graduation course-
Candidates must have passed 10+2 with minimum qualifying marks in aggregate with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics as core subjects. 
Independent entrance tests for this programme are also held by the various state, central, and private universities which mostly require 50% as the prerequisite to appear for the test.
 
For post- graduation course-
Candidates must hold a degree in Bachelor of Engineering/B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering/Industrial Design along with a good score in entrance tests held for PG programme held by the various state, central, and private universities.
 
Job opportunities-
 You can explore opportunities as a Product Designer or Industrial Design Researcher in the manufacturing sector, research institutes, information technology companies, and with companies that deal with the design of innovative products.
 
 
 
 
 
 
A career in Computer Science has been proved lucrative and rewarding since last decade. Computer Science and its applications are fast becoming one of the most sought after courses both at undergraduate and post-graduate level in India.
 
What is it?
Study  in Computer Application includes knowledge of computer fundamentals and programming concepts as well as learning and mastering programming languages.
 
Education-
-Degree programs offered in Computer science include undergraduates courses like B.Sc and BCA. 
-One can pursue a pass course or an honors program in Computer Science in addition to other conventional science subjects like Physics, Chemistry and Maths. 
-Those who complete BSc in Computer Science can continue postgraduate program i.e. M.Sc Computer Science.
 One having a simple science degree can pursue Master of Computer Application program which is the best choice for aspirants of computer Science
For MCA program entrance examination is generally conducted by the respective institute/university or the state.

What is it?
Geologist is a Scientist who studies about the Earth structure, how it is made, its origin & its history.”
Geologist studies, earth processes such as earthquakes, landslides, floods, and volcanic eruptions.
 
Education-
  • Bsc in Geology(3 years) /Bsc Geology(4 years)
  • Require 12th  passed in science with PCM
  •  Applying to a Master’s degree in Geology-(2 years)
  • 50% in pcm in bachelors 
  • Ph.D in Geology- MINIMUM 50% in masters.
 
Job opportunity
•A geologist can work in engineering and consulting firms, government agencies, mining companies, petroleum companies, museums. 
•The UPSC conducts exams for placement in GSI, Central Ground Water Board etc. 
•They also have an option to take up IAS/Forestry Service. PSUs like ONGC, Hindustan Zinc Ltd conducts All India Entrance exam for hiring Geologists. 
•For a geologist to work in a country like ours, we have the option of working for the organizations like Central Ground Water Board and the Geological Survey of India, Coal India, Oil & Natural Gas Corporation, Mineral Exploration Authority, Hindustan Zinc etc. Among others these are few which offer job opportunities for Geologist with good packages.

Those who specialise in the field of meteorology are called Meteorologists or Climatologists or Atmospheric scientists. The main task of a meteorologist is to collect and analyze information on atmospheric conditions. Meteorology as a career deals with study and research of the atmosphere, prediction of the weather, identification and interpretation of climatic trends etc.
